Data Analyst Resume Example
Data analyst roles get flooded with applicants who list "Excel" and "data analysis" and stop there. What actually separates a resume that gets an interview is specificity: which tools, what kind of analysis, and what decision your work changed.
Skills Section: Be Specific
Group by category and name actual tools, not categories:
- Languages/Query: SQL, Python (pandas, NumPy), R
- Visualization: Tableau, Power BI, Looker
- Data warehousing: BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift
- Statistics: A/B testing, regression analysis, hypothesis testing
- Spreadsheet: Advanced Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, macros), worth naming specifically since "Excel" alone signals basic proficiency
Bullet Points: Show the Decision, Not Just the Dashboard
❌ "Created dashboards to track sales performance."
✅ "Built a Tableau dashboard tracking regional sales performance, which identified an underperforming territory and informed a re-territorization that increased quarterly revenue by 12%."
❌ "Analyzed customer data using SQL."
✅ "Queried 2M+ customer records in SQL to segment churn risk, enabling a targeted retention campaign that reduced monthly churn by 8%."
The pattern: tool used → what you analyzed → what changed as a result. A dashboard nobody acted on isn't a resume-worthy achievement; the decision it enabled is.
Keywords ATS Systems Look For
Common terms across data analyst postings, match the job description's exact wording where possible:
- "Data visualization," "data pipeline," "ETL," "data cleaning/wrangling"
- "Statistical analysis," "predictive modeling," "KPI tracking"
- Specific certifications if you have them (Google Data Analytics, Microsoft Power BI)
Structure by Background
Transitioning from another field
Lead with a short summary bridging your prior domain expertise (e.g., finance, marketing) with analytical skills, domain knowledge plus data skills is often more valuable than data skills alone.
Recent graduate
Include relevant coursework, academic or personal projects with a public repo/portfolio link, and any Kaggle competitions or capstone analyses with real datasets.
Experienced analyst
Emphasize the business impact of your analysis over the technical mechanics, hiring managers at this level assume you know SQL; they want to know what you've influenced with it.
Watch the ATS parsing risk: data analysts often like to show off with charts or infographic-style resumes. These frequently fail ATS parsing entirely. Save the visual flair for your portfolio link, keep the resume itself in a clean, single-column, text-based format.
