CV Letter Example
If you've searched "CV letter example," you've probably noticed the term gets used two different ways: some people mean the cover letter that goes with a CV, others mean a formal letter format of the CV itself. We'll cover both, but the version employers actually ask for 95% of the time is a cover letter that accompanies your CV. Here's a template you can adapt in minutes.
The Structure That Works
A CV cover letter has four parts, and each one does a specific job:
- Opening line: Name the role and where you saw it. Skip "I am writing to apply for...", just say it directly.
- Why you, specifically: One or two sentences connecting your background to what the job actually needs.
- Proof: One concrete achievement with a number attached to it.
- Close: A simple call to action, you'd welcome the chance to discuss further.
Example
Dear Hiring Manager,
I'm applying for the Marketing Coordinator role at [Company] listed on your careers page. I've spent the last three years running paid social campaigns for a mid-sized e-commerce brand, and I'm drawn to [Company] because of how deliberately you've built your brand voice across channels.
In my current role, I rebuilt our Instagram ad funnel and cut cost-per-acquisition by 34% over two quarters, the kind of hands-on optimization I'd bring to your team from day one.
I've attached my CV and would welcome the chance to talk through how I could contribute. Thank you for your time.
Best regards,
[Your name]
Three Mistakes That Undo a Good Letter
1. Repeating your CV
If your CV already lists "managed a team of 5," don't repeat that sentence in the letter. Use the letter to explain why that matters for this specific job.
2. Generic openings
"To whom it may concern" and "I am writing to express my interest" are filler. Recruiters skim past them. Get to the point in your first sentence.
3. No numbers
"Improved efficiency" means nothing without a figure attached. "Cut turnaround time by 40%" is a claim someone can actually evaluate.
Quick tip: Keep the whole letter under 250 words. A cover letter's job is to earn a closer read of your CV, not to repeat it.
Writing One for Every Job
The template above works, but the version that actually gets responses is tailored to each job description, different proof point, different "why you" depending on what the posting emphasizes. Doing that by hand for every application adds up fast, which is exactly the problem our cover letter generator solves: paste in a job description and it writes a tailored letter using your real CV content in seconds.
